Glucaric acid was identified as a TOP Molecule from Biomass because of the myriad of uses for which it could be relevant. Multiple billion dollar addressable markets including fibers, coatings and detergents were identified.
Customers around the world are demanding new materials and polymers that respect the environment. Their customers want to transition the billions spent on oil based materials to renewable materials. Unfortunately those same customers are rarely willing to pay a substantial premium for those renewable intermediates.
So you need a new intermediates that can be used a wide range of uses. Those new intermediates also need to be price competitive. Those intermediates need to be available for $1/lb or less. Fermentation of sugar would be idea but microorganisms do not naturally offer the desired molecules.
By creating new pathways in microorganisms you are able to create new intermediates that offer the wide range of uses but also the low cost potential. With sugar prices below $0.20/lb and the highly efficient and scalable nature of fermentations you have great potential.
Our pathway for glucaric acid will provide the low cost route to this molecule and the many markets uses that led it to being listed as a Top 10 Molecule from Biomass by the DOE. Based on the work of Professor Kristala Prather of MIT, we will be able to provide renewable access to the molecule. Equally importantly we will provide the molecule at a cost competitive price compared to existing oil-based materials and substantially below the traditional chemical based route.
